I’d like to see how they ensure that I-phones don’t offer any advantage. It wasn’t really that long ago that having a Nextel was a BIG advantage.

This will be part of the Atlanta Alley-cat Series.

A MAP of Fort Ahearne

posted by admin ~ March 24th

Not really… Perfect weather today so I took out the OLD de bernardi out for a ride. It’s gotten an odd facelift as of late, 32mm Paselas(barely fit, but they fit) and a front Wald rack. It fares surprisingly well off road, the next steps being a brake and a shorter gear. The trick with the basket is intelligent bungee use so that your beer doesn’t fly out the basket over rough terrain.

We just got in the Ahearne/MAP bars and they are tempting me to put them on the de bernardi… 60$

ahearne-map.jpg

Also resupply on Soma sparrows(similar to the Ahearne but 40$), Pake space straps, conti gatorskins, ultrasports, now in white! and GR-9s in black.

I finally got around to getting a picture in front of this earthen fort that they built in the park behind the old shop. They built it last fall for a civil war reenactment in the park and it’s still up, it was a fairly odd scene originally. Since the city went for this t’s hard to imagine what they wouldn’t permit. Now it has downed trees and power-lines overtaking it’s walls. I’m going to get some better pictures as soon as they get rid of the downed power-lines.fort.jpg

Google releases cycling option in maps.

posted by admin ~ March 11th

If I(and I’m sure many other cyclists) had to bike somewhere(far) I would use the walking button. It turns out that a cycling option for Google maps was one of the most requested features from users, and a recent petition with over 50,000 signatures convinced Google that it was time.

I figured that the first test would be to see how closely it followed one of my regular rides. From the shop to Dekalb Technical College out on Memorial and 285. It matches the route I have allready been using(essentially a modified version of the walking route) turn for turn. I’ve heard from others that it been closely matching the regular routes they all ready take, and it’s deviations are logical enough to give them a try.

My favorite part of the whole deal is that they mounted the panoramic street view camera to a trike, so that they can capture images of cycling trails, or really any relevant street which can’t be accessed by car. No street view for the silver comet or chief ladiga trails yet, but I’m sure they won’t be short of volunteers if they ever plan to map them. Which makes me also think that if you were the google team you would want to do that ride off season so that you didn’t have a whole bunch of cyclists just following you along and ruining all the shots..
