Manges

The Manges are more than a band, they’re a punk rock institution! They’ve been keeping the blitzkrieg beat alive for more than 12 years now.

For this release the striped army have recruited NYC’s Kitty Kowalski for lead vocal duties - she’s got voice and a style of singing that are like an echo of Punk Rock’s past. Put the two together and you’ve got a combo that can’t be beat! The three songs on this release feature what is probably the best tribute song to Joey Ramone ever penned, a duet with Andrea and Kitty, and a cover song that’s good enough for you! It’s Alive counts itself very lucky to have become part of the Manges extensive 7″ catalog.

And you better believe that anytime these guys wage war on the music scene It’s Alive’s rag-tag gang of grunts will be among the ranks of G.I.’s following our heroes into battle. We were beyond stoked to be asked to team up with Italy’s Gonna Puke Records for the vinyl release of the Manges second album Go Down. I’ve been following The Manges for quite a while now, ever since Screeching Weasel covered “I Will Always Do” on their “Teen Punks In Heat” record. Over the years the Manges have proven to be true pop-punk stalwarts. Forging the frontlines of punk rock for a better tomorrow. In the vein of the Ramones these italian bubblegum nerds are “da brudders” of the west. Early in their career the Manges chose to write playful pop-punk tunes that everyone could listen to. Focusing more on life’s insignificant moments of clairity via. Breakups, fist fights, happy days and Elvis Presley. The latest installment from the Manges is called “Go Down”. By far their most mature recording to date. The title track “When Heros Go Down” is a grown up look at accepting the let downs and shortcomings of yourself and your heroes. One thing the Manges have always had is superior songwriting. This FACT is made evidently clear on the new record. ‘Vengeance Is Mine’ is a song with the right amount of everything to be poetic and poignant. A chef may call this ‘Mise en Place’ it brings you down but not without lifting you up again. Very coming of age in it’s honesty and motivational elements. Another song that stands out to me is ‘Ten Shots’ a song with flawless harmonies. A great example of true storytelling. Makes your heart beat a little quicker for the simplicity of Rock & Roll. ‘My Rifle’ is a tune that sets itself apart from all the others in the fact that it demands to be heard. Unrelenting and on target this song echoes early Clash installments that were never written. It will be a classic! ‘Don’t Mess it Up’ A song everyone can see themselves in. Brutally honest with a hug that says we all bleed red i’ll be there for you if you’re there for me. Rounding out the disc is a track entitled ‘Emergency’ which is 80’s and pure killer in it’s homage and dedication. What ever happened to that Dee Dee King character? All in all I think this was my favorite record of 2006. Intelligent, witty, robust and lovelorn the tales the Manges weave are sties of life in it’s rawest forms. Be it sadness/heartbreak or vengeance/victory they hit the nail on the head every time. Their dedication to the Ramones and what the band stood for is unparalled. No one brings honesty to the table anymore, but the Manges are true visionaries and can see the beauty in the things around them then transcribe them to music so we all understand one another a little better. Andreas is an accomplished songwriter who is still brave enough to sing about “love” rock & roll’s timeless muse. The songs he leaves behind will inspire generations in the same way as Joe Strummer, Dee Dee Ramone, Ben Weasel, Bob Dylan and David Bowie. One other person that needs to be recognized for their role in this wonderful record is Phillip Hill. We all know this guy. How could you not? Had a great band out of Nashville, The Teen Idols, for some years. Played with Screeching Weasel on the last record. Most recently played with the
Queers for a few years. He’s the guy that is always smiling, always accomidating always a positive figure. Phil made this good record a great record And I think the Manges will back me up on this.
