The Johnie 3 have grown on me over the years. I didn’t like them, at first. I figured they were assholes by how snotty some of the tunes were. But I kept an open mind and listened every now and again. The more I listened the more the songs stuck in my head. It was annoying at first, like how my wife can’t hear Bobby Mcfarlen’s ‘Don’t Worry Be Happy” or she’ll strangle somebody. But after a while I was adding Johnie 3 tunes to my favorite I-tunes play lists and before I could say Balls & Shaft they are one of my favorite bands today. From the 7” splits with Darlington and the Prozacs, the Johnie 3 are leaps and bounds from the band they once were. Working hard on the road and in the studio they have made 2 new recordings for 2007, ‘Hang the DJ’ & a 4 song contribution to the Cocktail Nation Records ‘Connect Four Comp. Vol. 1’.
Today we are here to talk about ‘Hang the DJ’, out now on Rally Records! 13 of Pop Punks proudest moments burned with a laser beam especially for you. This disc does not miss. ‘Danelectro’ is the opening tune, summing up a boy’s relationship with his guitar. Strong and steady, sweet and endearing! Not the least bit Creepy. ‘Baby, we don’t care’ is the next track and one of the best on the album. A full frontal assault of Pop-Punk-Rock. It keeps building and building until everybody is walking around with their chests all puffed out and there’s not a care in the world cause everybody’s so cool! I love bands that can wear their heart on their sleeve and pretend it’s a ketchup stain. Up third is the title track and Johnie 3 in TRUE FORM. This song couldn’t be written by any other band. They’ve got the right amount of whatever they needed in this song. I love that Danelectro sound, Pop Fuzz! Simply, it makes you want to party. Wherever you are, turn the volume up, put the burrito down and shake your ass.
Throughout this entire album you will find well delivered, saucy bass lines, fast, down stroked pop-punk guitar and a steady four on the floor backbeat.
Jay’s lead vocals don’t command attention but more so they “take down the ugly walls between artists and audience”. This band shines through their imperfections and with this you get well played tunes and honest songwriting with a pinch of self-deprecation & a whole lotta candor.
This record is filled with Pop-Punk songs for every occasion. You get “Love” songs—Allison, Do you wanna, Anything for you, New York Girl & I Miss You. You get “Fuck You” songs—Indie Rock & Please Don’t Call me. As always you get your “Fun Party” songs like Annie Got Herpes & Here We Go.
For fans of Pop-Punk music this is a must have for any collection. Another good thing about this band is the fact that they are very active within the music community. They tour regularly, play most of the important “festivals” on the circuit & put out new music every year.
